Unlike
many other disciplines of engineering,
the field of Bio-medical engineering
is a multidisciplinary branch. Here
the candidates are required to learn
subjects from electrical, electronics,
mechanical, instrumentation, software,
networking, biochemistry, microbiology,
etc. apart from the basic subjects
related to human beings like anatomy,
physiology and pathology. Therefore,
each outgoing student will be a jack
of all these subjects but master in
only one or two subjects.
Biomedical
engineers learn to use traditional
engineering expertise to analyze and
solve problems in Biology and Medicine,
thus enhancing health care. They apply
advanced technology to the complex
problems of medical care. Biomedical
engineers have given the medical world
an array of scientific riches that
have made life better. These include
Hearing Aids, Cardiac Pacemakers,
Artificial heart, Artificial Kidney,
Synthetic Blood Vessels, Synthetic
Joints and Limbs and imaging equipment
like MRI, Ultrasound Scanner, CT Scanner,
etc., and Laboratory equipment like
automated CLIA analyzer, RIA analyzer,
chemistry analyzer, Lab on chip, etc.,
and drug
targeting and delivery in Pharmaceutical
industry.
Biomedical
engineers design devices used in various
medical procedures, such as the computers
used to analyze blood or the laser
systems used in corrective eye surgery.
They develop artificial organs, imaging
systems such as magnetic resonance,
ultrasound and x-ray and devices for
automating insulin injections or controlling
body functions. |
